Based on, and from personal instruction of Proff. Kickuth, the original founding designer of subsurface wetlands.

MSR® Technology, Microbial-Soil-Reed Beds are providing world-leading treatment of industrial wastewaters including hydrocarbons from numerous producing oil fields, glycol treatment at airports, landfill leachate, steel mill effluent, ammonia manufacturing, and many other applications.

All stable processes for treatment of organic contaminants involve the degradation of common and complex compounds with the use of microbial action in either anaerobic or aerobic conditions. Organic wastes provide nutrient for microbial growth. When combined with suitable micro-organisms, contaminant waste is degraded to inert compounds such as carbon dioxide and water.

MSR® Technology accelerates the natural sustainable microbial processes unlike any other wetland by creating an environment suitable for optimum microbial degradation using a specifically designed proprietary combination of plants and soils designed to provide a passive treatment system.

Normal soil only has a surface horizon of up to 10cm containing aerobic bacteria. MSR® Technology extends the active microbial region in soil 800%, down to 80cm into the specialized proprietary soil matrix. The specialized wetland plants create a mosaic of aerobic and anaerobic areas within the soil structure by transferring oxygen into the soil. Our plants also create a flow pattern that is continually regenerative and stable.

The natural soil micro-organisms and fungi that are used for bioremediation are present and immobilised within this structure, increasing the diversity of microbial cultures, enabling existing systems to be operational at temperatures of -30°C to +50°C against all classes of xenobiotic compounds, whilst providing robust resistance against peaks of high loading contaminant.
